Keeping Track of Time

The three bronze bells in the tower of Saint Peter Church have been programed to keep track of time.  At the quarter-hour the bells strike a ding-dong sound; at the half-hour the ding-dong sounds twice; at the three-quarter hour the ding-dong sounds thrice; and on the hour the ding-dong sounds four times followed by a striking for the hour of the day — 1 strike for one o’clock, 2 strikes for two o’clock, 3 strikes for three o’clock, etc. The bells begin to function each morning at 8:15 and they are silenced each evening after the nine o’clock strike.
