Traditionally, a church bell tolls upon notification that a parish member has died. The tolling is a continuous striking of the bourdon bell [the heaviest bell that produces the lowest tone]. In Saint Peter Church, the bell is struck every 10 seconds for 5 minutes. When we hear the somber tone, we are encouraged to pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased individual. The bell will also toll immediately following the funeral liturgy.
Eternal rest, grant unto him/her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him/her. May he/she rest in peace. Amen. May his/her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
